Markha Valley Trek

One of the most popular treks in Ladakh. And this trek is a perfect combination of beautiful trans-Himalayan landscape with Ladakhi villages. Well, you will have good chances to spot some high altitude wildlife as well as experience the life of nomadic families as they herd their yaks in these big and beautiful valleys. And after couple of days of acclimatization to high altitude in Leh, you will set out to explore the heartland of central Ladakh valley. In fact, it involves crossing of high passes like Stok La (4848m), Kongmaru La (5274m), Gandla (4878m) and walking on the banks of the Markha River. Kang Yatse Peak (6400m) can be approached from this route as the base camp is on the plains of Nimaling.

Day 01: Arrive in Delhi
After arriving at Delhi airport, we will meet you on the airport and transfer you to the hotel. 
 
Day 02: Fly from Delhi to Leh (3500m)
Today, fly from Delhi to Leh. And after arriving at Leh airport, we transfer to hotel.  Then, relax and acclimatize. In the remaining time, we will visit Leh market in the evening. We will stay overnight at hotel.
 
Day 03: Acclimatization day at Leh (3500m)
Today will be our acclimatization day. We will visit Leh palace, the Shey/Thikse gompas. We will stay overnight at the hotel.
 
Day 04: Drive from Leh to Chilling and trek to Skiu (3400m)
Today, our trail passes through a flat and desolate plain along the river Indus and swings into the mountains along the pretty, willow-lined Zingchan gorge. We will stay overnight at camp.
 
Day 05: Trek from Skiu to Markha (3700m)
Today, we trek to Markha. And the trail to Markha is not too strenuous rising about 300m across 22 kilometers, crossing the Markha River a couple of times. Well, Markha is a substantial village complete with a derelict fort on the hillside and a small village monastery. We will stay overnight at the camp.
 
Day 06: Trek from Markha to Thachungtse (4150m)
Today, we will start our trek from Markha to Thachungtse. On the way, we will pass through Kang Yatse (6400m) which is a magnificent snow-clad mountain and commands the views for the next two days. And it’s a popular place to spot herds of blue sheep slide up and down the steep cliffs with incredible agility. We will stay overnight at the camp.
 
Day 07: Trek from Thachungtse to Nimaling (4720m)
Today, we have to pass through several mani (stones with prayer inscriptions) walls and suddenly come across a small lake. The view is wonderful from here—both of Kang Yatse whose bulk gets reflected in the still waters of the lake and also of the Markha valley which we are now well above. We will stay overnight at camp. 
 
Day 08: Trek from Nimaling to Shang Sumdo (3660m) over the Kongmaru La (5130m)
Today, as we climb the last short but steep slope to the top there are good views over the Zanskar range and of the vertical ice walls on the north face of Kang Yatse. The trail eases out to reach the river bed at Shang Sumdo. We will stay overnight at camp.
 
Day 09: Drive Shang Sumdo to Leh
Today, we get into vehicles to go to Hemis monastery or continue directly to Leh. In the afternoon, we take our free time to stroll the market of Leh. We will stay overnight at the hotel at Leh.
 
Day 10: Fly from Leh to Delhi
T Today, we will transfer to the airport and catch our early morning flight to Delhi. In the spare time, we can visit the famous Hindu Temple Akshardham, Red Ford and Laxminarayan Temple as well as old part of the town like Chandni Chowk. Overnight, we will stay at the hotel in Delhi.
 
Day 11: Final Departure from Delhi
Today, you will fly for your own destination from Delhi.

I am now in my final year at university in England but a few summers back I was lucky enough to be part of a trek adventure in the Everest region organised by ColdFeet.
